America’s Dependence on China for Medicine
Many of us don't realize how dependent we are on China for life saving drugs like penicillin, blood pressure medicines and other common OTCs like aspirin. China controls over 80% of the raw ingredients used to make generic drugs, a new executive order from President Trump may be a step in the right direction.
There is no doubt the global pandemic continues to illuminate many of the problems we face in healthcare and medicine. Even before COVID-19, we faced drug shortages of critical medicines but as the problem continues to grow, physicians and pharmacists have to re-think drug treatments, change doses, or even postpone treatments. Many people are becoming aware of a critical global issue that is contributing to this drug shortage and while it’s not breaking news to some, it’s gaining more attention with current policy, a recent executive order by President Trump, and a small cluster of people who are willing to educate the public on just what it means to have China controlling the worldwide manufacturing of generic pharmaceutical drugs.
In 2018, healthcare advocate Rosemary Gibson co-authored a book called China Rx: Exposing the Risks of Americas Dependence on China for Medicine. On a recent podcast with Robert Kiyosaki of Rich Dad Radio Show, Gibson shares valuable information that affects us all. Many people have no idea that we no longer make penicillin in the US. We cannot even make life saving antibiotics because years ago China undercut prices forcing our US manufacturing plants out of business. The last manufacturing plant closed in 2004 as China obtained global control of the raw ingredients and chemicals used to manufacture prescription drugs.
